Matriarch is a collaboration of blood, sweat, paint and thread, in celebration of May Day.
Lucy and Lisa first discussed a collaboration in 2020, but life was relentless in throwing out obstacles. For Matriarch to push through, they had to embrace any opportunity and run!
Matriarch is difficult to define, as she came about so quickly with so many threads. The prominent pull of inspiration came from depictions of May Day celebrations of the late 19th century socialist posters of Walter Crane, promoting the international solidarity of labour. A combined admiration of folk horror, Beltane and Ostara set in our beautiful peak district melded the rest.
‘Matriarch is seed and ash, she is the dawn and dark. She is strength, unity, solidarity, equality too. She is steadfast, a pillar in steel and stone. She is fur, scale, skin and leaf. She is quick and slow. She is hard-graft & rhadamanthine rest. She is very fucking busy. Hail Matriarch!’
